Role of filter design in embolic protection during carotid artery stenting
نویسنده
چکیده
Endovascular carotid intervention has undergone a dramatic and rapid evolution since its early inception in the 1990s at which time it comprised a rudimentary angioplasty technique. Quite apart from changes in the size and format of the guidewires used (0.014 inch, rapid-exchange compatible) and stents and balloons (dedicated, low-profile), perhaps one of the most interesting developments has been the introduction of cerebral protection devices. These devices are intended to control the emboli generated by carotid artery stenting and thereby reduce the embolic complications of the procedure. A number of different cerebral protection systems are available but this article will focus on the most popular: the filter.

ANGIOPLASTY AND STENTING OF CAROTID ARTERY STENOSIS WITH EMBOLIC PROTECTION DEVICES
Background: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has recently been recommended as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) by some clinicians. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the success rate and in-hospital and 30-day adverse events in our first experiences in Iran for CAS with protection devices, to document our results and guide further use of CAS. Methods: From December 2...

BACKGROUND The use of a distal filter cerebral protection device with carotid artery stenting is commonplace. There is little evidence, however, that filters are effective in preventing embolic lesions. This study examined the incidence of embolic phenomenon during carotid artery stenting with and without filter use. METHODS This was a prospective, randomized, single-center study of carotid a...

BACKGROUND Embolic protection during carotid artery stenting reduces the rate of thromboembolic events. The Wirion Embolic Protection System is used to deploy an independent distal filter using any 0.014″ guidewire. WISE study (Wirion Study Europe) evaluated the safety and performance of Wirion Embolic Protection System in patients undergoing carotid artery stenting. METHODS AND RESULTS A pro...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of carotid artery stenting (CAS) with a filter protection system. BACKGROUND Neurologic events linked to the embolization of particulate matter to the cerebral circulation may complicate CAS. Strategies designed to capture embolic particles during carotid intervention are being evaluated for their efficacy in reducing...
متن کاملComparison of anti-embolic protection with proximal balloon occlusion and filter devices during carotid artery stenting: clinical and procedural outcomes
AIM The objective of this study was to compare the periprocedural and clinical outcomes after carotid artery stenting (CAS) with proximal protection devices versus with distal protection devices. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis undergoing CAS with cerebral embolic protection were randomly assigned to proximal balloon occlusion or distal filter protect...
